Continued from part 5
Hi Everyone, Tis me again.
Since my last update some major component rebuilding has gone on.
Slomat`s heart was to be reassembled after all parts required had been procured. I am pleased to say this has now happened and the main part of the engine is together.
I tested the workings and found the pistons pistoning, the crankshaft crank-shafting and all the turny bits turning at the right time. How good was this? Time to place the cylinder head on (which has also had some major rework). Damn - didn’t notice the bypass hose fitting in the lower part of the head was no good (too short). Bugger!!! Send the head back to Link for some TLC to fix the problem. Cool, got it back now, still yet to be fitted.
Whilst the head was in, being repaired I decided to acid-dip the gearbox and all the other bits inside it to clean them up. No, before you think ACID! it was specific for the task and suitable for aluminium.
It cleaned up a treat, absolutely spotless in the places it needed to be (inside the damn thing). The gears also gleaned up a treat.
I felt like a thunderbird ALL SYSTEMS GO, however, I forgot I was working on a Moke, you know it, the bearings were not so accommodating to my desires to reassemble without too much grief. Gotta replace all of em. Damn!
O.K. all the bearings are replaced and the box is back together hoo bl*@%dy ray! Time to test all the current workings again before I offer the gearbox to the engine and guess what? It all worked.
The box and short engine are now together, time for the clutch housing. "Did it go smooth?" I hear you say! Before you ask I will say just say NO! Nothing ever does when you try to rush things because you are excited about how well things are going. Let’s just say clearances MUST be right for the idler gears or trouble is imminent when the box and engine are already together. No room to measure correctly, along with the constant removal & refit of the clutch housing to get it right. After some pretty frustrating time I finally get it right. Now the clutch is fitted along with all the other turny bits to connect the drive line through the engine to the box.
Short engine is now complete. What a marathon. It is now ready to fit to Slomat. Opps! Gotta stop. Slomat`s not ready for it. She’s still Gotta be painted. Onto the little coloured tubes that take the smoke to all the electrical parts of the car. No, on second thoughts back to her body. Lots to do here to get it right so I will stop now and update as to my progress in the next instalment.
Chow 4 now & keep on Mokin`
